未来を生きる中学生の皆さんへ
皆さんは山に登ったことがありますか？ あるいは雪原を歩いたことがありますか？
自分が登ろうとする山の頂をその麓から見上げるとき、私はいつも「本当にあんなに高いところまで行けるのだろうか」と不安になります。もちろん登頂できるからこそ、その山を選んだわけですが、それにしても「あそこまで登らなければならないのか」と見上げる頂は、いつも想像を超えた高さに君臨しています。
視界のほとんどが白と黒の雪原を歩くときにも、同じ思いをします。目の前に広がる雪の中を何キロも歩き切らないと今日の宿営地にたどり着けないという状況のなかで、ラッセル（雪をかき分け進むこと）しながら思うことは「本当に目的地まで歩いて行けるのだろうか」ということです。
しかし、遠くの目標地点を見てため息をついているだけでは、いつまでたってもそこにたどり着くことはできません。意を決して、まずは一歩を踏み出します。時間が経つうちに足取りは重くなります。時折休憩をはさみながら、長い時間を自分のペースで進むうちに、遥か先に見えた目的地に近づいていることを少しずつ実感します。しかし、この段階ではまだあまり嬉しくはありません。まだまだ辛い最中だからです。
ようやく目的地に到着したとき、その風景に私は圧倒されます。あるいは心地よさを感じます。このときに感じる「達成感」があるからこそ、私は途中の苦しさに向き合います。
真っ白の雪原でまっすぐに歩こうと足元ばかりを見ていると、めざす方向からずれてしまうことがあります。遠くにある樹木や山の位置を目安にしていないと、まっすぐに歩いているつもりでも、振り返ると自分の歩いた跡が不思議と曲がっているのを目にします。
目の前の一歩を慎重に踏み出すことはとても大切なことですが、足元にばかり気を取られていると、遠くに見える目標を見失ってしまうこともあります。途中、足が雪から抜けなかったり、ブリザードで視界がなくなったりすることもあります。しかし、トラブルも、自分の頭を働かせ乗り切ることによって「成長の糧」になります。コンパスを手にした自分を信じ、遠くの目標を凝視し、諦めることなく歩き続けるからこそ、目的地にたどり着けるのです。
中学生の皆さんにとっては、まだまだ長い人生は始まったばかりです。行く末の遠さを想像して怯む必要はありません。目先の一歩を置く場所が正しかったか間違っていたかに一喜一憂する必要もありません。全てが思い通りになる道中ではないかもしれませんが、一歩一歩を自分の足で歩くからこそ自分だけの足跡が残されます。遠くの目標を見つけることと、道中の苦労とを人任せにしてはいけません。もちろんAI任せにしてもいけません。
苦労なしの人生なんて、ありません。東洋高校で、ときには「もやもや」しながら、「思い通りにならない」といった経験をしながら、ぜひそれぞれの目的地に近づいて行ってください。
皆さんが将来、皆さん自身にしか見ることのできない、息をのむような風景に出会えることを東洋高校は応援しています。
To Middle School Students Stepping into the Future.
Have you ever climbed a mountain? Or have you ever walked across a wide field of snow?
When I look up at the summit of a mountain from its base, I often feel uneasy and think, “Can I really make it all the way up there?” Of course, I choose mountains that I know I can climb. Even so, the summit before me always feels far higher than I imagined.
I feel the same when walking across a snow-covered plain. With almost nothing but white and black in sight, I know that I must walk many kilometers through the snow to reach that day’s campsite. As I push my way forward through the deep snow, what comes to mind is a simple question: “Can I really reach my destination?”
However, if I only look at the distant goal and sigh, I will never reach it. So I make up my mind and take the first step. As time passes, my steps grow heavier. I take breaks from time to time and continue moving forward at my own pace. Little by little, I begin to realize that I am getting closer to the place that once seemed impossibly far away. Even then, I do not feel much joy yet, because I am still in the middle of hardship.
Finally, when I reach my destination, I am overwhelmed by the scenery before me, or I feel a deep sense of comfort. It is because of this feeling of “achievement” that I am able to face the difficulties along the way.
On a wide white snowfield, if you look only at your feet and try to walk straight, you may drift away from the direction you are aiming for. Without using distant trees or mountains as guides, you may believe you are walking straight, only to find that your footprints have curved when you look back.
Taking each step carefully is very important. However, if you focus only on what lies right in front of you, you may lose sight of your distant goal. Along the way your feet may get stuck in the snow, or a blizzard may block your view. Yet these troubles can become sources of growth if you think for yourself and overcome them. By trusting yourself, holding your compass, fixing your eyes on your goal, and continuing to walk without giving up, you can reach your destination.
For middle school students, your long journey in life has only just begun. There is no need to be frightened by how far the road ahead may seem. There is also no need to worry too much about whether each step you take is right or wrong. Life may not always go as planned, but by walking forward step by step on your own, you will leave footprints that belong only to you. You should not leave your goals or the struggles along the way to others—and of course, you should not leave them to AI either.
There is no life without difficulties. Here at Toyo High School, you may sometimes feel uncertain or frustrated, and things may not always go as you hope. Even so, we encourage you to continue moving toward your own destination.
